Whirlwind Tour of Cincinnati

Did a whirlwind tour of Cincy in about 8 hours. After pointing the Prius in the right direction, the first stop we made was lunch at Black Forest. Luckily, we got here about 1:50PM, and they were still serving their lunch buffet. It was absolutely fantastic, and quite a bargain. For the low price of $6.95, we were able to get sauerbraten, spaetzle, red cabbage and regular sauerkraut, mettwurst and bratwurst, chicken schnitzel, gulaschsuppe, and much more. Damned fine deal and we left the place stuffed. Unfortunately, no pictures of the spread because I forgot the camera.

As I promised, we took pictures of our take when we got home.

After we stumbled out of Black Forest barely able to move, we drove the 3 or 4 miles down the highway to the Kolache Factory These *are* piroshki by any other name, and they really hit the spot. We bought a couple of boxes worth.

Savory Kolache – don’t ask me to tell you what’s what, but we had just about every flavor in here.

and Sweet Kolache (well, mostly – the long thing on the left is a mild sausage kolache). The rest, from top to bottom, left to right: broccoli cheese kolache (savory, but we ran out of room in the other box), pecan kolache, poppy seed kolache, sticky bun, chocolate cream cheese kolache, cream cheese kolache, and coconut cream kolache.

The killer thing is, today is B1G1F day, so we walked away with all that for about $13 bucks.

Another 10 or so miles and we got to our intended destination: Jungle Jim’s. That place is absolutely massive, and absolutely impressive. They had lots of great stuff we can’t get around here – here’s some of the stuff we got:

Produce. I go nuts in a produce section. Most of the stuff we can get locally, but the stuff they had here just looked super-fresh. From left to right: Runner beans (aka Italian green beans), cilantro bunch (only .44!), red delicious apples, poblano peppers, and pumelo. Can’t say I was tempted by the durian, which is described in the Wikipedia article as “its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away.” I didn’t get close enough to find out.

I think my husband ended up getting more stuff than I did. Among his take was this collection of hot sauces. I like spicy foods well enough, but I don’t go out of my way to permanently lose sensation in my tongue.

And he couldn’t go past the British section of the market without stocking up on good old creamy chocolate. I have got to admit, this stuff makes American chocolate taste like chalk.

I got some German and Eastern European stuff for making comfort food in the next month or so.

And I couldn’t resist the call of the arepas (which will be great when I throw some shredded chicken or pork and all the fixings on them) and Cuban sandwiches.

And last but not least, various and sundry good stuff – the Brie was only .99! And the Prosciutto di Parma (not pictured) was $4.99/lb!!!! $21 off it’s normal price. I don’t know why it was so cheap, but it sure as hell tasted fine with some melon a little earlier tonight.

It was definitely a fun place, and well worth going to again sometime.

On the way back, we hit the outlet mall, and I got a whole bunch of discontinued Yankee Candle scents that I love – Sweetpea and Tangerine Peach. I’m a happy camper.
