Katie,
I moved from Columbus 30 yrs. ago and one of my greatest memories was the scrapple sold in the Big Bear Stores. I know the stores are now closed, but I've been attempting to find out where Big Bear bought its scrapple. If you or your readers can help, I'd appreciate it.

Re: Katie

I have to tell you, as a girl who grew up in Cincy and now lives in Maryland, goetta and scrapple are NOTHING alike. Goetta has much more texture, looks a little less like mystery meat, and tastes much better, as far as I'm concerned.

Hello
Have you or are you familiar with waffle cakes (dutch or amish from fairgrounds) If so how may I purchase them or make them please. These are so hard to find in L.A. but we always get them at Columbus State Fair.
Thanks

[...] We spent early Saturday making our rounds in the Intercourse area, stopping here and there - Paul got some delicious homemade root beer and fudge from an Amish roadside stand, and in addition to our trips to Stoltzfus Meats and Kitchen Kettle Village, we also stopped at the Intercourse Pretzel Factory where we got hard and soft brown buttered pretzels, and the Bird-in-Hand Farmer’s Market, which was so crowded that I only bought some apple cider and got myself a funnel cake. It kind of makes up for missing The Ohio State Fair this year, because I love fair food, and funnel cake is about as fair food as you can get. [...]

This is similar to goetta, something I ate a lot growing up in Cincinnati.

It's better when you don't think about what you're actually eating hehe.

I know Dutch in this case comes from "deutsch" (German) but I think there is something in the part of Holland where I live now that is remarkably similar to scrapple and is eaten for lunch/breakfast, called "Balkenbrij" (unable to translate). When ready you let it cool, slice in slabs and grill! Amazing how dishes travel through years and continents and stay recognizable.
