Farm Fresh and Local Produce 8/2/08
Author: swampkitty05 // Category: Columbus, Eating Local, Farmer's Market, ProduceI seriously didn’t know whether or not I’d be making it to the markets this morning – when I went to sleep last night I had so much pain in my leg from my knee to my hip that I could barely walk. But after a round of muscle relaxers, painkillers, and Tylenol Arthritis, by the time I got up at 6:30 the pain was just a dull ache, and I hobbled off to do our morning market crawl.
We got another super-early start, arriving at the North Market at about 7:30. It was another planned light week for me, since I had just a few items I needed to get and a little more self control than usual. Our first stop was my weekly dose of shiitake mushrooms at Toby Run – just a half pound this time. Across the way they had some lovely Santa Rosa plums, which I picked up for baking, and many varieties of apples – I picked up a Golden Delicious-like variety to use for baking later this week. The first of the heirloom tomatoes are beginning to arrive. There was one vendor at the North Market Farmers Market that had several varieties (the name of the farm escapes me now – anybody know offhand?). Here’s just one basket of the many varieties.
And onions are everywhere now – if anyone had trouble making an all-local meal before, now they have no excuse.
We got done there before 8am, so we didn’t even need to put any money in the meter (bonus!), and headed off to Worthington much earlier than we usually do. Most of the vendors were already set up, but there were a couple who weren’t. We were greeted by the sight of these cheerful sunflowers:
We didn’t get a whole lot at Worthington – a bag of Yukon Gold potatoes and a cantaloupe at Northridge Organic Farms, a couple corn cobs for making popcorn, some fry pies at 2 Crows, and that was that. So early start, early depart.
Clintonville was happily uncrowded when we got there at 8:40. We found parking right on the street, and were quite happy about not having to walk too far, especially with my hip starting to act up again and me limping along slowly. Snowville Creamery wasn’t there today, which is unfortunate because I really need to buy milk and enjoy talking to them. I did pick up a half dozen ears of the beautiful corn they had at Yoder’s though.
And I got a pound and a half of apricots from Wayward Seed Farm, for making something special in the next couple of days:
And this year at Clintonville, there’s a new vendor – an artisan bread maker. We picked up a couple of baguettes (a plain one for me, a baguette aux lardon for my husband) to much on later tonight with some wine and cheese as a snack.
Sippel Family Farm had tomatillos today. Although I didn’t buy any, I definitely see some salsa verde in my future.
By time we got done browsing, 2 Silos was set up, and we picked up our requisite eggs for the week along with an Amish doughnut for each of us. And then we were done, done, done – all before 9am. I promptly came home and went right back to sleep.
And where did *you* go and what did you get on this lovely Saturday morning?
