Yes, it’s still the better part of a week away, but I’m starting my menu planning now.
Paul’s already made it crystal clear that I’m not to mess with any new recipes for the main meal – and I agree. I have my traditional dishes that everyone likes which I’ll keep on making – like turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing in the bird, gravy, candied yams, and canberry sauce.
So my place to experiment is with appetizers and desserts. I’ve got a few ideas, but would love your input. What appetizers/desserts does your family love? Stuff I can prepare ahead is a plus.

If you are into custard or creme brulee types of dessert, I recommend the leche flan. You can prepare it 3 days ahead and keep chilled in fridge. You may want to add 8-oz softened cream cheese to the custard base.

I love to make a rich artichoke appetizer that’s easy to make ahead and bake off whenever you’re ready. I don’t have the recipe handy here but it’s basically artichoke hearts wrapped in a small slice of proscuitto, then sprinkled with a good blue cheese like Maytag. Then you pour a little cream over them and top with fresh sage leaves before baking until it’s bubbly and golden. It is a very rich dish but one or two bites will do you!

I love to make Pumpkin Bread Pudding. It’s comforting and can be made ahead. It can be served hot, warm or cold and, best of all, you don’t have to make a crust.
